Welcome to Sylvania!
Sylvanian Families, or «Calico Critters» in the United States, is a line of anthropomorphic dolls created in 1985 by Epoch. They have captured the hearts of children and collectors alike across the world with their cute and cozy charm. From rabbits to cats to bears to even seals and snow leaopards, there's something for everyone in Sylvanian Families!
The franchise is set in Sylvania, a fictional village set somewhere in the UK. Or North America. Or, actually, it's in Tokyo...? Anyway... The design of the buildings, clothes and cars are all quite distinctly 1950s style.
How'd I get into it?
I've always had Sylvanian Families in my life. It isn't really something I ever... 'got into'. It's just always been there, sitting in the background, maybe in the corner of my room or next to the fireplace.
The shopping centre I go to from time to time has a huge Sylvanian Families display in the toy section and I go there every time we stop by to shop, even if it's just for a haircut or a movie to watch. It's actually quite surprising to me how Sylvanian Families of all things has a huge display with a custom made house shaped shelves and a mega sized Freya figure... I'm in Portugal! The only other franchise with such a display is Lego. And there's stuff like Monster High and Barbie at that section!
Animation
I've... never actually, uh, watched any of these. I actually found out about most of them in the process of making this page.

Sylvanian Families - 1987
(United States of America)
Seems like your standard 80s 'animal friends' cartoon. There isn't really any reason I'd want to watch this other than it being Sylvanians related. It seems they've added human characters, which I really hate. -
Stories of the Sylvanian Families - 1988
(United Kingdom)
I've always wanted to see an official Sylvanian Families cartoon animated in stop motion using the dolls and the houses as sets, and I'd always wondered why there never was such a show... Turns out I was wrong, and in 1988 they released a Sylvanian Families stop motion cartoon! All four episodes are available online to watch for free, so I will be sure to check it out soon. -
Sylvanian Families - 2007
(Japan)
It's quite hard to find any information on the OVA in English. It had two websites but all the information is in Japanese, and I don't speak Japanese... The first one I linked has a lovely little Flash menu with pages on each episode. I highly recommend taking a trip around the site, maybe with a handy Google Translate tab by your side, because it's a really cute site.
From what I can gather, the three episodes centre on different stories about each of the characters. There's one about the Fox, who's a magician, one about the Squirrel, who wants to become a princess, and one about the Cat and the Rabbit, who want to go on some adventure/expidition of sorts.

Sylvanian Families the Movie: A Gift from Freya - 2023
(Japan)
I found out about this one through an Instagram post linking to a Youtube video for the trailer of this film as it was coming to the UK, which hopefully means that it'll get an English dub soon. I don't know really anything about the movie other than that it looks cool, it has the same style as the 2007 OVA but more modern and polished. It actually looks REALLY good, I hope it comes out soon...
My Collection
You can check out my collection in more detail over here.

Games
None of the Sylvanian Families games are in English and none of them have had their sprites ripped yet!!! I know not many people read my pages, but I'm hoping that if someone does, they read this and get to doing that!! I don't know how ripping sprites works so I can't be much of a help. But, please! There's seven games, three for the Game Boy Colour, two for the Game Boy Advance, one for Windows 98, and one for the Sega Pico.
My Favourite Families
(Out of the ones I own, of course.)
